Changes in the Primary School Science Syllabus You Need to Know

To better equip students with the essential skills and knowledge to thrive in a science-driven world, the Ministry of Education (MOE) has introduced significant updates to the Primary School Science syllabus in Singapore. The modifications will impact students taking the PSLE from 2026 onwards. Let’s take a look at the changes made, aimed at nurturing a deeper appreciation for the subject.

The “3 INs”

The updated Science Curriculum Framework for primary schools in Singapore is centred around three key principles, known as the “3 INs”:

1. Inspired by Science

Students are encouraged to develop a fascination with Science, appreciating its relevance to real-life problems. This approach enhances problem-solving skills and cultivates a deeper engagement with scientific concepts. The updated curriculum focuses on nurturing curiosity and wonder, helping students become more motivated to explore and understand the world around them.

2. Inquire like Scientists

The art of scientific inquiry is embedded within classroom activities, enabling students to confidently evaluate claims and ideas using scientific evidence and logical arguments. This principle helps students develop critical thinking skills and creates a systematic approach to problem-solving, benefiting both their academic and personal lives.

3. Innovate using Science

Students are empowered to apply scientific knowledge creatively to solve real-world challenges, enhancing their interest in pursuing careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). The emphasis on innovation encourages students to think outside the box with novel solutions to complex problems.

To help students excel in this curriculum, parents can consider enrolling their children in PSLE science tuition in Singapore. For instance, at LevelUp Tuition, our tutors simplify complex Science concepts into simple and easily digestible, bite-sized information. Students are then repeatedly tested on these concepts until they become second nature. When encountering similar questions in exams, they can confidently use these learned phrases to provide the precise answers teachers are looking for.

Key Changes in the Primary Science Syllabus

Beyond the framework, MOE has also made some key changes to the syllabus, aiming to enrich students’ learning experiences and better prepare them for future challenges in the scientific field.

1. Removing the ‘Cells’ Topic

The Primary 5 Science syllabus no longer includes the topic of ‘Cells’. This change aims to lessen the need for memorising complex scientific terms, giving students more time to explore other topics that emphasise applying scientific concepts.

2. Learning a Set of Topics at Every Level

Instead of dividing the syllabus between lower and upper primary, it is now organised into levels to ensure a coherent and meaningful progression of concepts from Primary 3 to Primary 6.

Here’s a breakdown:

3. Understanding Specific Learning Outcomes (LOs)

For instance, according to MOE, Primary 6 students no longer need to use specific terms such as ‘air resistance’ and ‘water resistance’ when evaluating the interaction of forces. These clearer LOs streamline the teaching and learning efforts of both teachers and students, allowing them to concentrate on concepts and keywords that truly matter. This also means that primary science tuition in Singapore will ensure their curriculum is updated accordingly to help students meet the new set of criteria.

4. More Focus on Skills

The glossary of terms in the syllabus has also been updated with an objective to focus more on skills such as analysis, evaluation, hypothesis formulation, and decision-making. This shift ensures that students are not only learning scientific facts but also developing the ability to apply what they have learned in real-life situations.

Supporting Your Child’s Science Education

As students adjust to the new syllabus, it’s crucial for parents and educators to offer extra support, strengthening their skills and knowledge needed for success in the updated curriculum. Enrolling your child in primary science tuition can prepare them by enhancing their critical thinking skills, practical application of scientific concepts, and encouraging inquiry-based learning.
