How to Master the Assumption Method

Why "Guess and Check" Method is Costing Your Child Time?

Picture this: Your child walks out of their Primary 5 or PSLE Math exam looking defeated. When you ask them how it went, they say the most frustrating sentence in primary math: “I knew how to do the last few questions, but I ran out of time.”

Running out of time on Paper 2 is rarely a speed-writing issue. It is almost always a strategy issue.

If your child is still relying on the “Guess and Check” method to solve complex word problems, they are leaking precious minutes on the clock. Here is why “Guess and Check” is a trap for upper primary students, and how mastering the Assumption Method can help your child solve the exact same problem in a fraction of the time.

The “Guess and Check” Trap

In lower primary, students are taught “Guess and Check” to solve basic puzzles. You draw a table, guess a combination of numbers, calculate the total, and adjust until you hit the right answer.

For simple numbers, it works. But by Primary 5, questions involve hundreds of items and large values.

Why it fails in upper primary:

  • A Massive Time Drain: Drawing a table and calculating 5 or 6 different incorrect guesses can easily eat up 10 minutes for a single question.

  • Causes Panic: If a student’s first three guesses are wrong, anxiety sets in. They start making careless calculation errors inside their table.

  • Isn’t Foolproof: If the answer is an odd number or a fraction, a student might never “guess” it.

How to solve Assumption questions using 4 step method. No more guess and check! Students often find assumption questions difficult because the solution (or heuristic) is foreign and unintuitive. Try out the four steps a few times and you will get the hang of it! Jia you!

The Solution: The 4-Step Assumption Method

The Assumption Method completely eliminates the guesswork. It is a logical, 4-step mathematical formula that guides the student straight to the exact answer, usually in under two minutes.

Let’s look at a classic primary school “heads and legs” problem to see the difference:

The Question: A farmer has 20 animals, consisting of chickens and cows. There are 56 legs in total. How many cows are there?

The Assumption Method Breakdown:

  1. Assume the Opposite: The question asks for cows, so we assume ALL the animals are chickens. (20 animals Ă— 2 legs = 40 legs)

  2. Find the Total Difference (The Gap): Compare our assumed total to the real total given in the question. (56 real legs – 40 assumed legs = 16 legs short)

  3. Find the Individual Difference: What is the difference in legs between one cow and one chicken? (4 legs – 2 legs = 2 legs)

  4. Divide to Find the Answer: Divide the Total Difference by the Individual Difference to find out how many animals need to be “swapped.” (16 Ă· 2 = 8 cows)

Answer: There are 8 cows.

No tables. No guessing. No erased working. Just four lines of clean, logical math.

How We Teach It at LevelUp

We know that teaching a new heuristic can be intimidating for weaker students. We don’t just throw the Assumption Method at them and expect them to memorize it. We build their confidence systematically.

  • Guided Scaffolding: When introducing the Assumption Method, our worksheets provide step-by-step thinking hints for the first few questions. We prompt them to ask, “What should we assume first?” before letting them tackle questions entirely independently.

  • Second Attempt: To help re-conquer mistakes. This builds the high-speed muscle memory needed to solve complex Paper 2 word problems independently under real exam pressure.

  • Progressive Practice: We reinforce the method with highly targeted practice questions, progressively removing the hints until the 4-step formula becomes second nature.

Stop Losing Marks to the Clock

If your child is leaving 4-mark and 5-mark questions blank because they are stuck drawing endless “Guess and Check” tables, they don’t need to study harder, they need a better strategy.

Our math specialists at LevelUp Tuition are experts at decoding MOE heuristics and turning complex word problems into simple, repeatable formulas.
