PSLE starts in P1: why your child does 12 − 6 the “weird” way

From our weekly teachers' meeting.

Number bonds are almost the first thing children learn in Primary 1, and the first things they do with them are "subtract to 10" and "add to 10".

12 − 6: split the 6 into 2 and 4. 12 − 2 = 10, then 10 − 4 = 6.

17 + 8: split the 8 into 3 and 5. 17 + 3 = 20, then 20 + 5 = 25.

When I first saw it, it looked like the weirdest thing. Years later, I realised there is wisdom in it.
