From our teachers’ sharing session. Some schools don’t teach the word “displace”, or the long phrase (“occupies the space previously occupied by the air”), yet they expect students to answer air-and-liquid questions.
We teach DEF: displace, escape and flow. The air escapes, then the liquid flows in and displaces the air.
If your child’s school has no preferred phrase, write “displace”. It is scientifically correct. If the school deliberately taught the long phrase, stick to the long phrase.
