PSLE Science: why “more coils” is marked wrong (electromagnet)

A Primary 4 question that catches Primary 6 students — and teachers.

The question gives you an electromagnet: a rod, a coil of wire, and two batteries, lifting an object hanging on a spring. It asks for one change that makes the object move up more. Two answers are accepted: increase the number of batteries, and increase the number of turns of wire around the rod.

The trap is the second one. “Increase the number of coils” sounds identical and means the same thing to most of us — but it is the phrase used for MAKING the electromagnet, not for making it stronger. One school marked it wrong.

If your child is sitting PSLE Science, this is a five-second fix: the strength answer is TURNS, not COILS.
