PSLE Science: why a correct answer still gets marked wrong

Kydon posted a video about an electromagnet answer — number of turns versus number of coils — and it got a bigger reaction than anything else on the channel. This is the follow-up, and it is about something most parents never see: two markers can look at the same correct idea and only one of them accepts the wording.

“I also teach number of coils, until I saw the number of turns. Then I was like, oh my goodness.”

There are around 100 primary schools in Singapore, each with its own Head of Department, and Booklet B — the open-ended section — is where the difference shows. The science is the same everywhere. The phrasing a particular school will accept is not.

His answer to it is not to argue. It is to find out what each school prefers, change the centre’s notes, and make sure the students write it that way. Ten years of doing that has made it rare. It has not made it go away.
