PSLE Science: What The Brown Dots Under A Fern Leaf Actually Are

Turn over a fern leaf and you will find rows of little dots. They are spore bags, and they are the whole answer to a PSLE Science question that catches children out: not every plant reproduces by seeds.

In this clip: where the spore bags sit, how to tell a ripe one from an unripe one by colour, what happens when they ripen, and why the wind is all a spore needs to travel. Filmed on a real fern growing outside, with macro shots close enough to count the spore bags.

A P5 to P6 Science idea that turns up again and again in PSLE Science, shown in under thirty seconds.
