PSLE Maths: how to solve 3 units = 2 units + 6

Secondary school students solve 3x = 2x + 6 in one line. Primary school students are not allowed letters — so what do they do?

They draw it. One long equal line. Three units as a bar on top. Two units and the 6 as a bar underneath, matching the length. The moment the picture is drawn, the answer is visible: the leftover unit and the 6 are the same length, so one unit is 6.

The step people miss is the second one, and Kydon’s rule is that it never changes: after the model, it is ALWAYS number bonds. Not sometimes. Always.

The clip finishes with the harder version — 3 units minus 1 = 2 units plus 6 — built the same way, because the method does not change when the question gets uglier.
