PSLE AL bands are cruel – a tutor’s honest view

A tutor's honest view of the PSLE Achievement Level (AL) bands.

Each PSLE Standard subject is marked out of 100 and cut into 8 bands: AL1 is 90 and above, AL2 is 85 to 89, AL3 is 80 to 84, AL4 is 75 to 79, AL5 is 65 to 74, AL6 is 45 to 64, AL7 is 20 to 44 and AL8 is below 20.

At the top, one mark changes the band: 89 is AL2, 90 is AL1. AL2, AL3 and AL4 are only 5 marks wide each.

Lower down, AL6 is 20 marks wide. A child can improve from 45 to 64 and still be AL6, which can feel hopeless even when the child is working hard.

I understand the logic behind the system. But emotionally, it is harsh for a primary school child.
