When you add fractions, which number should the denominators become? The way we teach it at LevelUp: the smallest one.
1/4 + 1/6: you could multiply 4 × 6 = 24, but then you get 10/24 and must simplify at the end – a mark lost if you forget. Instead, count up both times tables: 4, 8, 12 and 6, 12. Make 4 and 6 the same: 12.
1/4 = 3/12 (4 × 3) and 1/6 = 2/12 (6 × 2). 3/12 + 2/12 = 5/12, already in simplest form.
