How to minus fractions: Make the Same

How to subtract fractions with different denominators, the way we teach it at LevelUp.

3/4 − 1/2: quarters and halves are different-sized pieces, so first we Make the Same. Make 4 and 2 the same: 2 already fits into 4, so only the 2 needs to change (2 × 2 = 4). Whatever you do to the denominator, do the same to the numerator, so 1/2 becomes 2/4.

Now minus: 3/4 − 2/4 = 1/4. The denominator stays the same.

Minusing the denominators too (3 − 1 over 4 − 2) gives 2/2 – a whole cake after eating some of it!
