How to tell which fraction is bigger, the way we teach it at LevelUp.
1/3 or 1/5? Many children pick 1/5 because 5 is bigger than 3. But the denominator tells you how many pieces the whole is cut into: cut into 5, each piece is smaller. When the numerators are the same, the smaller denominator is the bigger fraction.
2/3 or 3/5? Before you Make the Same, check which is easier. The numerators 2 and 3 become 6; the denominators 3 and 5 would become 15. So make the numerators the same: 2/3 = 6/9 and 3/5 = 6/10. Same numerator again, and 9 is smaller than 10, so 2/3 is greater than 3/5.
