How to add two fractions with different denominators, the way we teach it at LevelUp.
1/2 + 1/3: halves and thirds are different-sized slices, so they can't be added yet. We Make the Same: make 2 and 3 the same, which is 6. Whatever you do to the denominator, do the same to the numerator, so 1/2 becomes 3/6 and 1/3 becomes 2/6.
Now the slices are the same size: 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6. The denominator stays the same.
The most common mistake is adding the denominators too (1/2 + 1/3 = 2/5), which gives an answer smaller than 1/2.
